Coloccini linked with Palace switch

ESPN FC have reported that Crystal Palace are considering moving for Fabricio Coloccini, with the Newcastle United captain high on their list of defensive reinforcements.

With Coloccini ageing and entering the final year of his contract, he has not been given a guarantee that he will remain captain under new Magpies boss Steve McClaren and has therefore raised question marks over his playing time for the coming season.

Despite his terrific leadership skills, Coloccini endured a disappointing 2014/15 campaign as Newcastle escaped relegation from the Premier League by the skin of their teeth.

However Alan Pardew, who handed him the armband while Newcastle boss, has remained a big fan of the Argentine. With Chancel Mbemba’s imminent arrival, maybe Coloccini will lose his place in the side.

The 33-year-old fits the profile of defensive reinforcements that Pardew is seeking at Crystal Palace as he attempts to find a partner for Scott Dann and after being priced out of a move for Swansea’s Ashley Williams, Pardew could turn to his old side.

Coloccini has featured almost 250 times for The Toon since arriving at St James’ Park from Deportivo La Coruña in 2008.
