Armstrong signs for Coventry on loan

Adam Armstrong has joined Coventry City on a six-month loan deal, after Newcastle came to an agreement with the Sky Blues.

The highly rated youngster is in need of regular 1st team football to help boost his chances of breaking into the first team and has been told to go and prove himself by Steve McClaren.

Armstrong was expected to go out on loan last season with the likes of Nottingham Forest and Bolton Wanderers keen on a loan move for the forward but, due to an injury crisis and Lee Charnley’s failure in the January transfer window, the youngster was kept at the club.

With new arrivals and a fully fit squad available to Steve McClaren, Armstrong is currently well down the pecking order at the club.

Armstrong has appeared 18 times for the senior side and is yet to score, despite the fact he has a great record with the Newcastle U21 side scoring 17 in 25 appearances. He also has a phenomenal international record, netted 10 times in 11 games for England U17’s, followed by 6 goals in 6 games for England U18’s.

Newcastle and Armstrong will hope six months of regular first-team football with Coventry will prove beneficial for himself and the club.

Upon signing for the Sky Blues, Tony Mowbray said: “Adam is a striker we’ve been tracking throughout the summer and a prospect we’re really excited by.

“He has a fantastic eye for goal and his movement in the area makes life difficult for defenders. It is also an important stage of his development and he needs first-team games to progress as a player so this is a big chance for him in his career.

“We’ve been looking to add quality to our forward line throughout the summer, and despite his young age, I believe Adam will give us a fantastic option going into the 2015/16 season.”
