Newcastle United must move for 89-goal Premier League striker if Anthony Gordon joins Barcelona

  • Could Magpies replace him with Manchester United star?

On Bank Holiday Monday, a video took social media by storm, showing Anthony Gordon’s representatives leaving a taxi after talks with Barcelona director Deco. The Newcastle United winger is a major target for several clubs this summer.

As one door potentially closes for the Magpies, another could open with the Catalan giants. Hansi Flick’s side signed Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United last summer. The Englishman has made 29 La Liga appearances this season, registering 16 goal contributions.

United have the final say on whether he leaves this summer, though after a toxic relationship that has lasted close to two years, it may be time for Rashford to finally say goodbye to Old Trafford.

FC Barcelona hold Anthony Gordon talks

A win this weekend would secure the La Liga title for Barcelona, and they boast a wealth of attacking talent that has made this possible.

Wonderkid Lamine Yamal has been the catalyst for the club’s success over the past two years, while Raphinha has been a constant threat to any defence the five-time Champions League winners face.

However, questions remain through the middle. Ferran Torres has been reliable when called upon, though he could be set to leave Camp Nou this summer, while legendary striker Robert Lewandowski is approaching the end of his contract.

Flick favours a classic German style, where high intensity and pressing win games — something that suits the Newcastle winger perfectly.

The 25-year-old has operated as a striker on several occasions this season, despite Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa being available to Eddie Howe. If a move to Spain materialises, he could lead the line for Barcelona.

It would take a significant fee to prise the forward away from Tyneside, but after improving their financial situation, it is now a deal Barcelona could realistically pursue this summer.

Could Gordon to Bayern mean Rashford to Newcastle United?

Rashford is a player who thrives in the right environment. When conditions suit him, he delivers goals and consistent performances. Despite playing a reduced role for parts of the season, he has still found the net regularly.

He has already showcased his quality at St James’ Park earlier this season in the Champions League, scoring a second-half brace. In truth, he has revitalised his career in Spain and rediscovered his form.

Some members of the Toon Army may be wary of him, given how he has performed in the past, but his quality is undeniable. Rashford has pedigree with 89 Premier League goals.

The Magpies could look to benefit from a knock-on series of events. Gordon to Barcelona could mean Rashford returning to Manchester United without a permanent deal.

There is surely no way back from the England international at Old Trafford and another summer move beckons… with a big hole about to open at St James’ Park.
