No Europe for Newcastle United might just work in their favour

  • Newcastle United won’t play European football next season
  • Blessing in disguise for the Magpies
  • Eddie Howe can focus on Premier League form

With just one Premier League game left to bring the curtain down on the 2025-26 campaign, it has now been officially confirmed that Newcastle United will not play European football next season.

Chelsea’s victory against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday means the Magpies cannot finish above the Blues to secure a place in the UEFA Conference League, which will undoubtedly be a blow financially.

Newcastle United have improved in recent weeks and look set to finish the season strongly, but it goes without saying that it has been an underwhelming campaign across all fronts.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom at St James’ Park, provided they play their cards right in the summer transfer window and get their priorities straight.

Missing out on Europe a blessing in disguise for Newcastle United

After finishing fifth last season and securing a place in the UEFA Champions League, there was a lot of hype and excitement in the summer.

However, those hopes quickly dissipated after a lukewarm transfer window, with the likes of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga joining the club.

And it’s safe to say each of their summer signings has blown hot and cold at best, which is a sign that they got their recruitment wrong.

Additionally, they haven’t been able to replace Alexander Isak, while competing on four fronts clearly took its toll on the squad.

They were knocked out of both the domestic cups by Manchester City, while a 7-2 defeat against Barcelona dumped them out of the Champions League.

Domestically, they have lost 27 points from winning positions as they currently find themselves 11th in the Premier League standings.

When the new ownership was announced with Eddie Howe as manager, their primary aim was to break their trophy drought, which they did last year by getting their hands on the Carabao Cup.

However, their next step must be to finish as high as possible in the Premier League and even get close to winning it.

Now, if that were to be the case, not competing in Europe could have its fair share of advantages.

The cup competitions can also be on the back burner, which would allow Howe and the players to put all eggs in the Premier League basket and see where it takes them.

Important summer ahead at St James’ Park

Anthony Gordon is close to joining Bayern Munich, while Kieran Trippier’s imminent departure has also been confirmed.

The likes of Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock could also leave Newcastle, so a lot of changes could be in the offing.

The Magpies faltered in terms of their recruitment last summer and absolutely can’t afford to do so once again this time around.

As such, it’s going to be difficult to sign players due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so work will have already been done behind the scenes to identify potential targets.

And finally, they will try to avoid drawn-out transfer sagas like the one involving Isak last summer.

They got a Premier League record fee from Liverpool, but his departure came too late in the transfer window, due to which they panicked and dropped around £150m on Woltemade, Wissa and Elanga.

Howe has done a good job so far, but there is a feeling within the club that there can’t be a repeat of the 2025-26 season.

And without European football next season, the Englishman won’t have any excuses to finish as high as possible in the Premier League, which isn’t asking for too much for a club that eventually aspires to win the competition.

matchday.
