Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon has celebrated his call up to the England squad for this summer’s World Cup as he continues to be frozen out of Eddie Howe’s Magpies squad.

The 25-year-old hasn’t featured in any of Newcastle’s last five Premier League outings, missing two through a hip injury before being an unused substitute in the past three. Howe’s decision not to play Gordon comes amid rife transfer rumours.

Despite no Premier League minutes since early April, Thomas Tuchel today confirmed that Gordon would have a place in the World Cup squad this summer. It will be the forward’s very first World Cup.

Anthony Gordon reacts to England call-up

Gordon has been a prominent feature in the England side since his first appearance for the Three Lions in March 2024. The former Everton man was selected for the Euros in 2024 by Gareth Southgate but was afforded just one minute in the competition.

Tuchel unveiled his full England squad this summer, with Tino Livramento and Dan Burn also included. Lewis Hall has missed out in an unexpected decision.

Reacting to his call-up on social media, Gordon wrote: “Very honoured and proud to represent my country in the World Cup. Let’s go.”

It’s set to be a huge summer for Gordon, who has made 152 appearances for Newcastle since arriving from Everton for £45 million in January 2023.

Could Gordon make final Newcastle United appearance at Fulham?

The winger is set to be included in the matchday squad at Fulham on Sunday, but whether Magpies fans will see the player represent the club again is doubtful.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Howe said: “It’s a difficult one for me to comment on, in terms of how he should be remembered, because that’s us almost saying that he is going, and there’s no guarantee.

“We don’t know at this moment whether it will be his last game. Obviously, I’ve picked a team, as I’ve said many times, that in the last few weeks has been performing well.”

Gordon is widely reported to have agreed personal terms with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich with the two clubs now locked in discussions as Newcastle hold out for a £75 million fee.

TEAMtalk today report that Arsenal and Liverpool remain in the running to sign Gordon, but that the player has his heart set on a link-up with England teammate Harry Kane in Germany.

It had been thought that a deal could be completed before the World Cup, but that is looking increasingly unlikely. Gordon’s performances at the competition could help the club command a higher transfer fee but, conversely, an injury or underwhelming showing may hamper the Magpies’ negotiating position.

Lewis Hall snubbed by Thomas Tuchel

Gordon’s inclusion in the squad was expected, but the exclusion of Newcastle United teammate Hall is a head-turning decision from Tuchel.

The full-back has been one of the Magpies’ standout players this season and has often kept Burn out of the side. Nonetheless, Tuchel has opted for the big former Brighton man ahead of Hall.

Hall featured in both games against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley Stadium in March and appeared to be a shoo-in for the Three Lions squad. However, Burn is believed to have been included for his leadership qualities and set piece threat.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, England boss Tuchel said: “A lot of thinking went into these ‘soft’ factors, getting the chemistry right. It is important each player knows their role and we picked a very balanced squad.

“The best group is not necessarily the 26 most talented players. The group and the team will always be the main focus and I hope we have done this in selecting this group. That was the thinking behind it.”
