- Eddie Howe under pressure at Newcastle United
- Manager backed by Saudi Public Investment Fund
- Boos ring out from away section at Craven Cottage
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe finished the Premier League season with another defeat, this time at Fulham, as pressure remains on his position.
A run of four straight defeats had seen talk of a potential sacking escalate last month but Howe was backed by the club owners and expected to remain in charge for the 2026/27 campaign. However, a dismal display at Craven Cottage has highlighted the scale of change needed on Tyneside.
Howe had to answer questions about his future at full time. He said: Yeah, my commitment’s never wavered from day one until today.”
Next Newcastle United Manager odds
Xavi Hernandez – 12/1
Barcelona legend Xavi is biding his time before choosing a next venture, having left his position in charge of the Catalan giants in May 2024.
The 46-year-old remains a relatively new manager, having only been in charge of Al Sadd between 2019 and 2021, before getting the job at Barcelona. Xavi did win La Liga with Barcelona in 2023.
Marco Silva – 10/1
Fulham manager Marco Silva just inflicted defeat on Newcastle United and is one of the names in the running, should Howe depart.
The former Everton and Watford head coach has done a sterling job in cementing the Cottagers in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship. Silva is out of contract this summer and, while Fulham are keen to keep him, is expected to leave.
Roberto Mancini – 8/1
A more seasoned name linked with the job at St James’ Park is Roberto Mancini. The 61-year-old hasn’t managed in the Premier League since leaving Manchester City in 2013, but has been outspoken with his desire to manage in the division again.
Mancini is currently working in Saudi Arabia at Al-Sadd and has another year and a half left on a contract signed when appointed in November.
Oliver Glasner – 6/1
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has already confirmed that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season. The Austrian has delivered FA Cup and Community Shield silverware at Selhurst Park, and could yet add the Europa Conference League this week.
Glasner’s departure comes amid tension with the board at the South London club, with the manager not feeling supported in the transfer window. That could ring alarm bells for Newcastle United, who are having to be shrewd in the market this summer.
Andoni Iraola – 2/1
The clear frontrunner to take over from Howe is AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola. The 43-year-old has helped Howe’s former club punch well above their weight, securing Europa League football for next season.
Iraola has already confirmed that he will leave the Vitality Stadium this summer and there will be no shortage of suitors.
