- Newcastle United set for £15m Premier League prize money
- Magpies should rival Man Utd and Arsenal for Leicester City star
- Jeremy Monga tipped for greatness
At long last, the season is over for Newcastle United. It’s been a thoroughly underwhelming 2025/26 campaign that has promised so much.
The Magpies invested heavily in the summer transfer window last year with Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey all coming through the door at St James’ Park.
Thiaw aside, it’s fair to say that all of those arrivals have struggled to impress. The club must do better with their recruitment this summer.
The 2-0 defeat to Fulham on Sunday afternoon condemned Newcastle to a 12th-place finish. It’s the lowest ranking for the Magpies since 2021 and comes with no European football next season.
Newcastle United await Premier League prize money
A big rebuild focusing on the long term is needed and the club is clearly aware of that, with a shift in transfer focus to signing younger players with huge potential. Newcastle will be waiting to receive their 12th-place prize money, which will be around the £14.5 million handed out to Crystal Palace last season, and could invest that fee into a shrewd summer signing.
Leicester City are reportedly asking for £15 million to let the highly rated Jeremy Monga leave the King Power Stadium. The 16-year-old has all the credentials of a future star and is exactly the profile of player Magpies chiefs are said to be prioritising.
The Manchester Evening News claims that Manchester United are already in talks with Leicester City over a move for Monga, with Arsenal also in the running.
It would be a real sign of intent to see the Magpies beat their Premier League rivals to that transfer and prove that, even without European football, Tyneside is an attractive proposition to top talent – which Monga certainly is.
Race on to sign Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga
The winger was handed 27 Championship appearances this season in a breakthrough campaign, having actually made his Premier League debut against Newcastle United last season.
Speaking after that game, former Foxes manager and Red Devils legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy said: “It’s [Monga’s] development. It’s so quick, the way he’s improving. He’s shown it in training and that’s why we put him on.
“He showed a glimpse of his quality and he will only get better. Well done to him and hopefully there’s more to come.
“He had Ricardo also behind him, to talk to him a lot, to support him, but you can see his capabilities – to dribble with the ball, with the left and right foot, and he’s a really exciting one.”
At just 16 years old, it’s frightening to think just how good Monga could become. With Newcastle braced for bids for Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes this season, it’s time to think about who will hold down the flank for the Magpies long term – and spending that £15 million prize money on Monga could be fantastic investment.
