Newcastle United may have found their Trippier replacement even before he’s gone

Newcastle United are reportedly one of the many clubs interested in Celta Vigo right-back Oscar Mingueza this summer. The 27-year-old is being courted by a plethora of clubs across Europe after a solid season in La Liga.

Newcastle United are already losing Kieran Trippier with his contract running out, and there is speculation around the future of Tino Livramento. The Magpies could be in rather desperate need of a new right-back, and Mingueza could be the answer to the problem.

Mingueza will become a free agent following the conclusion of his contract at the end of June and is set for some heavy interest in his services.

Mingueza a Newcastle United target

The Spaniard already has eyes on him from other Premier League clubs, namely Aston Villa, and both La Liga and Serie A clubs, who are all circling ahead of the expiration of his contract.

The Magpies will be signing a right-back either way this summer, but it could need to be two if Livramento’s move away does materialise.

If the club can sign Mingueza on a free, it would make it much easier to go about the rest of their business, especially given the looming UEFA sanctions and possibility of needing to sell to buy.

The issue for Newcastle may be the lack of European football, as will likely be the case for most targets. With Mingueza set to have a good few offers on the table, most of those are thought to be clubs that can offer some capacity of European football.

The Magpies will need to offer a serious package and do some convincing around the direction of the project if they are to entice Mingueza to favour a move to Tyneside.

Trippier’s Newcastle departure was announced before the season concluded and the England international bowed out at St James’ Park after a fantastic performance against West Ham United in the 3-1 win.

And now, it looks like he will be taking his services to the Championship, with recently relegated Wolves close to securing his signature on a free transfer.

Perfect fit for the Magpies

Perhaps the most potent draw to Mingueza from a Newcastle perspective is his versatility. The 27-year-old can play in either full-back position, but can also operate further forward in wide areas if needed.

Should Eddie Howe still be the Newcastle manager next season, Mingueza would be a very useful option who can play in a variety of different systems across the season.

Mingueza can invert, play deeper, or make overlapping runs into forward areas. This season he has shown creative prowess and has created well over one goal-scoring chance per 90, commonly from full-back.

His ability on the ball would likely lend him well to the evolving system at Newcastle, aiding them in spells of possession, which has been a big problem during this campaign.

With Mingueza being available for free, it feels almost a no-brainer to bring him to Tyneside if at all possible.
