- Fabian Schar to stay at Newcastle United
- Defender missed large part of 2025-26 campaign due to injury
- Eddie Howe clearly a big fan of Schar
Newcastle United have made a big decision on Fabian Schar’s future, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the month.
Lee Ryder has now confirmed that the Magpies have offered him a new deal, with the Swiss international now set to remain at the club.
Earlier this year, it looked like Schar would leave Newcastle United as the Magpies planned a squad overhaul.
And while that may still happen, the 34-year-old is set to remain on Tyneside for another season at least.
Fabian Schar to sign Newcastle United contract extension
Since joining from Deportivo in 2018, Schar has quietly become one of the most reliable Newcastle United players of the modern era and is well respected in this part of the country.
He hasn’t featured since suffering an ankle injury against Leeds United in January, allaying fears that he has already played his last game for the club.
And now, Schar seems to have agreed terms with Newcastle United on a fresh deal, with an official confirmation expected shortly.
According to Capology, the defender earns around £70k-per-week at the club. Due to his age and recent injuries, it remains to be seen if Newcastle negotiated reduced terms, with more details expected to arrive in due course.
Schar made 21 appearances in all competitions before his injury in January and played more often than not when fully fit, which is a sign that he is held in high regard by Howe.
Mutual respect between Howe and Schar
Earlier this season, Howe confirmed that he wanted Schar to remain at the club as he lavished praise on the experienced defender.
“We want Fabian to stay. I think he’s got a lot to offer. I think we’ve missed him since he’s been injured. We’ve missed his distribution and his passing from deep has been a big miss for us, the way he accelerates our attacks.
“We wouldn’t be keeping anyone that we didn’t feel could help the team. I think Fabian’s been unbelievable for us. Until it’s signed, it’s not done, but I still feel he has a lot to offer.”
Schar, for his part, also revealed during the first few weeks of the 2025-26 campaign that he would love to remain at the club.
“I have said before I feel at home here,” said the Swiss defender via Chronicle Live.
“I know in football, you never know what happens, and it goes quickly. If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it, of course.”
Both parties have got their wish and Newcastle United fans will be thrilled as one of their longest-serving players is set to remain at the club for another season at least.
