- Newcastle United agree deal to sign Ewen Jaouen
- Reims goalkeeper set to sign four-year deal
- Magpies to pay big fee for talented goalkeeper
Newcastle United have edged closer to completing their first signing of the summer as Eddie Howe looks to fine-tune his squad.
According to Paris-based journalist Bertrand Latour, the Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Ewen Jaouen from Reims after a rather drawn-out transfer saga for the goalkeeper.
With Aaron Ramsdale returning to Southampton after his loan spell and John Ruddy departing on a free transfer, the need to recruit a goalkeeper became a top priority at St James’ Park.
And now, it appears as if Howe has got his wish, with Jaouen set to join the club imminently.
Ewen Jaouen to become Newcastle United’s first summer signing
Newcastle’s interest in Jaouen is well-documented, with the Magpies chasing the 20-year-old goalkeeper for a few months now.
Other clubs like Real Madrid were also interested in securing his signature. However, the Magpies have finally made their play to close the deal.
Latour reports that Reims are set to receive a fee believed to be in the region of €28.5 million, which is a sizable fee for a young goalkeeper who hasn’t played outside his home country.
Additionally, Jaouen is set to sign a four-year deal at the club, with the deal set to be formalised after a full agreement between all parties involved.
What does this mean for Nick Pope?
Nick Pope has blown hot and cold recently and could be on his way out of the club.
Jaouen’s potential arrival will excite the Geordie faithful, but it remains to be seen if he’s thrown straight into the firing line.
He has delivered a string of magnificent displays for Reims in Ligue 2, but the step up from the French second division to the rigours of the Premier League is something Newcastle United will be cautious of.
Of course, the Magpies aren’t paying a big fee for Jaouen for him to only play second fiddle.
But if Pope ends up leaving, maybe another experienced goalkeeper could be signed to replace him, which would give the Frenchman enough time to develop.
James Trafford has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, with the England international currently playing second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City.
Signing Trafford and having Jaouen deputise for him is the perfect arrangement for Howe, but time will tell if he gets his wish.
