- Newcastle United decide to sell Nick Pope this summer
- Ipswich town interested in signing Englishman
- Magpies want just £5m for the goalkeeper
Newcastle United’s decision on Nick Pope is the clearest example of their ‘one out, one in’ transfer strategy this summer.
The Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen for a fee believed to be in the region of €28m, with the Frenchman expected to sign a four-year deal at the club.
And now, Shields Gazette have confirmed that Pope will be on his way out this summer, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
The Englishman made a series of errors last season and lost his place to Aaron Ramsdale before eventually winning it back.
And now, it looks like his departure is a matter of if rather than when.
Newcastle United decide to offload Nick Pope
In November 2025, Pope made a series of errors that cost Newcastle dearly in games against West Ham United, Marseille and Brentford.
Since then, he failed to recapture his best form and lost his place to Ramsdale, who, in his own right, also struggled to retain his spot.
Pope got his place back during the back end of the 2025-26 season, but it appears as if the writing has been on the wall for a while now.
And according to the aforementioned report, the Magpies have decided to part ways with him this summer and will demand a fee of around £5m.
Ipswich Town have been credited with an interest and could look to capitalise on his contract situation to sign him for a cut-price fee.
Newcastle need another goalkeeper on top of Jaouen
Having a reliable goalkeeper is worth its weight in gold, as has been the case in recent seasons with Liverpool and Arsenal, among others.
Alisson Becker and David Raya have been indispensable assets for their respective clubs, with the latter, in particular, enjoying a sensational season with the Gunners on their way to winning the Premier League.
Pope has been a good servant for the club despite his poor form during the 2025-26 campaign. The Magpies have already sorted out a deal for Jaouen, but can he be trusted to start between the sticks in the Premier League after just a solitary season in the French second tier?
Does he have the experience and the character to play for a side where expectations are absolutely massive? The answer to all these questions is a resounding no and it’s not to diminish Jaouen’s ability.
Newcastle have paid a massive fee to snap him up, which is proof that he is clearly highly rated. However, signing another experienced goalkeeper would allow the Frenchman to develop and get to grips with the rigours of English football, which looks like what the Magpies have set out to do.
Pope is on his way out and the likes of Ramsdale and John Ruddy have already departed, so don’t be surprised to see another shot-stopper join the club this summer.
