Newcastle United suffer hammer blow in fight to keep Lewis Hall
  • Chelsea looking to re-sign Lewis Hall after losing Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid
  • Blues don’t have a buy-back clause on England international
  • Hall’s Newcastle United future uncertain with Manchester United also interested

Since the back end of the 2025-26 Premier League season, a lot has been written about Lewis Hall and Newcastle United.

The England international endured a great season overall but fizzled out towards the end, which led to his omission from the England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

There were also reports of a falling out with Eddie Howe – which was later denied – but the 21-year-old consistently found himself in the headlines.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Manchester United want to sign Hall, with the player not against a transfer.

And now, his former side, Chelsea, have agreed a deal to sell Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, due to which they could look to re-sign him under Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea might snatch Lewis Hall from Newcastle United

After bursting onto the scene at Chelsea, Hall moved to St James’ Park for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m to get regular game time under his belt.

Since his move to Tyneside, he has become one of the best left-backs in the country, attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world.

Manchester United’s interest in well documented, but after losing Cucurella, the Blues could enter the race to sign a player whom they know very well.

Alonso is set to take over the reigns at Stamford Bridge and losing a key player like Cucurella will undoubtedly be a big blow for him.

However, if the Spaniard decides to have a look at Premier League options at left-back, the Blues won’t have to look further than Hall, who looks like an obvious choice to reinforce that position.

At this point in time, there haven’t been any reliable reports of Hall returning to Stamford Bridge.

Caught Offside, though, have relayed claims that Chelsea could look to re-sign the 21-year-old in the coming weeks, confirming that they have made initial contact and are ready to rival Manchester United for his signature.

However, once Cucurella’s move to the Spanish capital is officially confirmed, the Blues making a move for Hall won’t come as a huge surprise.

Do Chelsea have a buy-back clause for Lewis Hall?

The short answer is no.

Hall joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2023 on a one-year loan deal with an obligation to buy. The deal was made permanent in the summer of 2024 and as we mentioned earlier, the overall transfer fee was in the region of £35m.

Hall’s sale was a pure profit in terms of the PSR guidelines for Chelsea, which also included a sell-on clause in his contract, although the exact percentage of it remains unclear at this stage.

Hall is a wanted man this summer, but Newcastle shouldn’t even entertain the prospect of selling him or other key players like Sandro Tonali if they want to be a force to be reckoned with next season.
