Premier League side Newcastle United are eyeing up a move for World Cup winner Iker Casillas as manager Rafa Benitez looks to sign an experienced goalkeeper in the January transfer window, according to a report on Sport Witness, who cite Jornal de Noticias.

The Newcastle boss is looking to add depth to his goalkeeping department and has identified Casillas as a target.

The Spaniard has found himself frustrated at Portuguese club FC Porto after losing his spot in the first-team and is reported to be open to making a move away from the club.

Benitez is desperate to sign a new shot-stopper to help his side avoid relegation and Casillas would add experience and quality to the side and his leadership qualities would be a valuable asset.

The Toon lost their recent match against Chelsea and currently sit in 15th place in the league table, only five points away from the relegation zone.

Benitez wanted to strengthen his squad further in the summer but failed to secure many of his main transfer targets, which included goalkeeper Adrian from West Ham United.

However, Benitez could have competition for the player as fellow Premier League clubs Burnley and Brighton are surprise contenders for his signature.
