- Anthony Gordon set to leave Newcastle United
- Magpies want Bazoumana Touré
- Other Premier League clubs also interested
Anthony Gordon hasn’t featured for Newcastle United in recent weeks as speculation surrounding his future continues to dominate the back pages.
And now, Sky Sports Germany report that the Magpies are in the race for Bazoumana Toure, who has made a massive impression with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
Gordon has agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich and already has one foot out of the door.
And it appears as if Newcastle United are wasting no time to secure his replacement.
Newcastle United in the hunt for Bazoumana Toure
Gordon has been central to Eddie Howe’s side over the past couple of seasons and fared particularly well in the UEFA Champions League this season, scoring 10 goals.
However, in recent weeks, he has been omitted from the squad, with Howe confirming that the decision has been made, keeping one eye on the future.
And Patrick Berger, who works for Sky Sports Germany, claims Newcastle United are in the race for Toure, who looks set to leave Hoffenheim after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
The report also mentions interest from Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester United and Aston Villa, which each of the aforementioned sides set to play in Europe next season.
Toure has a price tag of around €40–50m, which could certainly be affordable to Newcastle as they would get a sizeable fee from Bayern Munich for Gordon.
Toure’s stats this season
Primarily a left winger, Toure has also featured as a right midfielder for Hoffenheim and was also part of the Ivory Coast squad during the recently concluded AFCON.
His stats for Hoffenheim this season make for interesting reading.
- 32 appearances
- 5 goals
- 12 assists
- 26 games on the left wing
- 3 games on the right wing
- 3 games as a centre forward
If Toure is signed, he will look to take the left wing slot at St James’ Park and could strike up a lethal partnership with the impressive Lewis Hall.
The 21-year-old is blessed with blistering pace and a wand of a left foot, which allows him to cross the ball into dangerous areas.
His versatility would allow Newcastle to use him across the frontline, something Howe also did with Gordon.
However, the Magpies will have to fend off competition to secure his signature. Additionally, they won’t feature in Europe next season, so it remains to be seen if Toure favours a move to Tyneside if other Premier League clubs make a move for him.
