- Eddie Howe on future
Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has issued an apology to supporters following the 2-0 defeat to Fulham today.
The Magpies ended a disappointing Premier League campaign in defeat at Craven Cottage, with Eddie Howe struggling to get any signs of fight from his team.
Newcastle have finished the top flight season in 12th, eight points off the top six, dropping seven places from the 5th place finish 12 months ago.
Jamie Reuben issues Newcastle United statement
Taking to social media platform X after full-time, Reuben was quick to sympathise with frustrations from the fanbase. He wrote: “Thank you to the travelling support today , clearly a very disappointing result at the end of an underwhelming season, despite some great moments in the Champions League and other domestic cups we have not lived up to where we should and need to be.
“All of us from ownership down to the coaching staff and players will work tirelessly over the summer to advance our project, come back stronger and start the new season in the best way possible. To all our supporters, staff, everyone associated with NUFC thank you for your support.”
There were audible boos from travelling supporters at Craven Cottage at full-time as the club faces a big summer rebuild. Howe had appeared to be on the brink of being sacked last month but was shown support by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and owners on a visit to the city.
Eddie Howe addresses Newcastle future
Reacting to the game, Howe said: “Disappointing performance, not the way we wanted to end the season, that’s for sure.
“I think there was a disjointed view about the team today, in part, we had really limited selection choices. We didn’t really like how we performed for the halves and were really frustrated.”
Sandro Tonali was forced out of the match when picking up a problem in the warm-up and joined the injured Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley on the sidelines.
One positive from the defeat to Fulham came in seeing 18-year-old Sean Neave handed a Premier League debut. A product of the Magpies academy, the forward came on for Nick Woltemade with 13 minutes left to play.
Howe was also asked about his future on Tyneside and said: “My commitment’s never wavered from day one until today.”
In other news, Newcastle United have found their Sandro Tonali replacement.
