Ashley sticking with McClaren despite awful start

Mike Ashley will stay loyal to Steve McClaren, despite Newcastle’s dreadful start to the season. This is according to the Telegraph. McClaren is under heavy fire from Newcastle supporters as the team currently possess two points after 6 matches, sitting them in the relegation zone. Although he is under much criticism from fans, McClaren is receiving sympathy from the board because of the situation that he faces with the quality of players in his first team squad.

The quality of the five signings that Newcastle brought in this summer (Florian Thauvin, Ivan Toney, Chancel Mbemba, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum) seem to be lacking this year. When asked for an “experienced international centre-back”, Newcastle merely extended the contract of Fabricio Coloccini.

This January could prove to be a complete revamp of the first team for Newcastle as Cheick Tioté, Papiss Cissé, Gabriel Obertan, Vurnon Anita and Moussa Sissoko are all for sale as well as Mike Williamson, Sylvain Marveaux and Yoan Gouffran. The main target for McClaren this January will be QPR’s striker Charlie Austin.

Tim Krul has questioned the attitude of the team also. He said:

I think the attitudes need working – we must stay positive… we need men now out on the field. Players who want to work hard and give everything to get a good result.

This sort of frustration is being felt not only by fans and staff but by players as well which may lead to poor performances and a possible relegation if changes aren’t made soon.

matchday.
