Chelsea eye shock move for Toon defender

Jamaal Lascelles has emerged as a shock target for struggling Premier giants Chelsea, says Neil Ashton of the Daily Mail.

The under pressure Jose Mourinho has identified the need for more English talent within his troubled squad, and Lascelles is understood to be on the Blues’ radar.

The 22-year-old centre-back made the move to Tyneside back in 2014 for a fee of £4m, where he was part of a double deal which consisted of himself and Karl Darlow.

The monstrous defender, who stands at 6’2, has only made 3 first-team appearances for the Magpies. He particularly impressed against Northampton back in September and many feel he is developing well on Tyneside.

This news comes as a bit of a shock to both Newcastle and Chelsea fans, considering the current situation of both clubs. One could say that Lascelles doesn’t possess the experience needed to take Chelsea forward, but at the same time, he is undoubtedly a very promising talent.

As we all know, the drastic funds available to Mourinho means that this deal could indeed go ahead, but it will be interesting to see if anything surfaces. The question is, if Chelsea’s interest is genuine, will Newcastle be tempted to let one of their best youngsters go?

matchday.
