Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is a potential contender to succeed Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Spaniard is one of a number of names on a potential shortlist to take over the reigns at the Gunners should Wenger leave the Emirates at the end of the season.

Benitez, who has previously managed Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League and who most recently was the boss at Real Madrid, has steered Newcastle to the top of the league in the Sky Bet Championship with 65 points. The Magpies won 1-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Speculation has mounted over Benitez’s future with the Magpies after the club failed to bolster their squad in the January transfer window with the manager public criticising the Newcastle board.

The Mirror also report that Benitez will bring in Thierry Henry, currently Belgium assistant’s manager if he gets the job.

However, the former Valencia boss does face competition for the role with Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel also rumoured to be on the shortlist.

Wenger’s time at the helm of the London club is rumoured to be coming to an end with the Gunners’ form in recent months leaving the team fourth in the race for the Premier League title.

Newcastle are away to Norwich City on Tuesday evening before a home game with Aston Villa next Monday.
