Balague says no Torres for Toon

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has taken to Twitter to say that Torres will not be going to Newcastle United.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea forward has been linked with a move away from his boyhood club, Atletico de Madrid, back to the Premier League, where he found global fame at Anfield.

The 33-year-old has not scored for Atleti this season and has only played a full match once, in a 1-1 draw away at Elche. He has mainly been on the bench and coming on as a late substitute if coming on at all for Diego Simeone.

Atletico Madrid do have the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Luciano Vietto in the same position as Torres, so it’s clear to see why he would struggle for game time and would be linked with a move away from the team fourth in the La Liga table.

However, even though the former Premier League superstar was linked with a move to Newcastle United to work under former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, Guillem Balague, arguably the UK’s leading expert in Spanish football, has said (via Twitter):

About Torres and Newcastle: there is nothing at all going on about it.

If he were to move to St James’ Park, he would have to be competing for game time against Joselu, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle. So would not be a guaranteed starter.

This Saturday, while Newcastle play Manchester United, Torres has the small matter to deal with of the first derby against Real Madrid at Atletico Madrid’s new ground, the Wanda Metropolitano.

So Torres may move from Atleti, Newcastle may come for him in the future, nobody knows, although Balague seems to think there’s nothing going on. All will be revealed in the transfer window in January.

matchday.
