Buying club refuse to meet Newcastle’s asking price for wantaway star

According to Portuguese source A Bola, FC Porto have confirmed they aren’t willing to meet Newcastle’s £8 million asking price for Chancel Mbemba.

Reports over the last few days suggested a potential deal between the Portuguese champions and Newcastle could be on the cards.

However, when club representatives met to agree on a transfer fee, negotiations immediately broke down when Newcastle declared an £8 million asking price for the promising 23-year-old.

The centre back only appeared nine times for the Magpies last season and struggled to cement asplace in the starting line up for Rafa Benitez’s side. Mbemba is looking for a summer exit to get more first team football and develop as a player as Benitez does not feel the centre back is surplus to requirements but the large asking fee seems to be putting suitors off.

Already this summer, Scottish champions Celtic and Champions League-bound Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim have enquired regarding the DR Congo captains’ availability, whilst Belgian sides Club Brugge and Mbemba’s former club Anderlecht have both been long time admirers of the defender.

It is believed Porto are willing to offer £6 million but will not shift and meet the proposed counter offer set by Newcastle.

matchday.
