Newcastle United are set to revive their interest in Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris in January, according to the Daily Mirror.
The club made an approach in the summer with manager Rafa Benitez reportedly a fan of the Greek midfielder, but the board baulked at the £10 million price tag slapped onto him by the Portuguese club.
The player’s contract is up next summer, with the Mirror also reporting that Samaris is pushing to leave on a free transfer in the new year.
Newcastle are now hopeful that should they re-enter negotiations, this could lead to a drastically reduced price tag.
Samaris joined last year’s Primeira Liga runners-up from Olympiakos in 2014 and has enjoyed a successful time at the club, winning three league titles.
As the midfielder prepares to turn 30 in June it would not be a surprise if Benfica are happy to part ways with him as they look to reduce their wage bill.
Southampton have also shown an interest, but Newcastle are believed to be Samaris’ preferred destination and as such are in pole position to secure his signature.
