Newcastle miss out on signing of Moraes – another blow for the Magpies

Newcastle United’s failure to sign Wesley Moraes is another blow, highlighting the complications going on behind the scenes.

The Northern Echo have confirmed that Moraes will join newly promoted Aston Villa this summer, arriving from Club Brugge.

Newcastle reportedly watched the 22-year-old in action throughout the 2018/19 season, pencilling him in as a key transfer target.

Talks were held with the Magpies regarding the move, but in the end, the club’s “inability to complete any deals has proved costly”.

That’s due to “ongoing uncertainty” surrounding the ownership of Newcastle, as well as Rafa Benitez’s future.

It is a major blow to lose out on Moraes, at a time when the Magpies’ future look precarious.

Should a change of ownership occur and Benitez stay put, great things could be achieved in the coming years.

On the flip side, should neither of those things occur, Newcastle could find themselves in dire straits once again.

It is a frustrating start to what supporters will hope ends up being a productive summer.

Losing out to a team only just promoted from the Championship is not a positive situation to be in.

matchday.
