Clark: We made it difficult but we’re pleased

Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has admitted that he was disappointed with the loss of focus towards the end of the match against West Ham.

The Magpies were coasting to a 3-0 victory at the London Stadium but allowed the Hammers to pull it back to 3-2.

There were some nervy moments towards the end of the match and Clark admitted it would have been devastating if they threw away the three points. As quoted on the official club website, he said:

We would have been devastated if we didn’t take all three there. It was a bit relentless towards the end. The balls were coming into the box, we couldn’t get up the pitch or get out of our half at all.

We made it difficult for ourselves and nearly threw it away. They got the two goals and those last four or five minutes were definitely nervy.

We made it hard but we stuck together. It’s about trying to stay focused. We’re all pleased. Obviously, we’re disappointed with the way we let it go at the end but at the end of the day we wanted to come down here and get three points, and that’s what we’ve done.

Clark managed to get his name on the scoresheet and is in good form for the Magpies having started the last four matches in succession.

His honesty is refreshing and he’s right in saying that it would have been a disaster if they let their lead slip.

Steve Bruce now seems to have got his players playing how he wants as they executed his gameplan to perfection in the first period.

matchday.
