Exclusive: Newcastle hero rebukes club’s performances

It has not been a good start for the Magpies, claims former Premier League and Newcastle defender Steve Howey.

Since the opening day of the Premier League season a fortnight ago, Newcastle have lost three games in a row and are yet to record any points on the league table.

One of those losses came against Burnley in the second round of the EFL Cup in mid-week, where they lost on penalties following a 0-0 deadlock after 90 minutes.

Magpies manager Steve Bruce and his players are now facing intense scrutiny for their performances over the last couple of weeks, and a lack of investment from the board in this transfer window hasn’t helped.

Fans have become frustrated with results already and off the back of last season’s turbulence, patience is beginning to wear thin.

Although Newcastle finished positively in 12th position last year, the club flirted with relegation for the majority of the campaign.

On the matter, former Newcastle player Steve Howey spoke exclusively to Read Newcastle:

“You know two games and six goals conceded, it’s not a great start.

“They’ve got Southampton [next week] which could be a big, big game for Newcastle.”

So far the only signing the Magpies have completed is a £25million deal for Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle.

Whether or not they will sign any more players in this transfer window is unknown, however, the club know that something needs to change otherwise they could be facing another relegation-threatened season.
