Newcastle Just Made the Right Decision over Kieran Trippier’s Future

  • Newcastle confirm Kieran Trippier departure
  • The English right-back’s contract expires in June
  • Magpies need a rebuild

Newcastle United and Kieran Trippier will part ways at the end of the season and it indicates that the club are heading in a new direction. The English right-back was the first high-profile arrival after the Saudi-led takeover in 2021.

Trippier arrived at Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 for £12m plus add-ons. He returned to the Premier League after spells with Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley.

The 35-year-old has been a key man for Eddie Howe, making over 150 appearances and winning the Carabao Cup last season. His game time has decreased and he’s handed over his right-back starting berth to Tino Livramento.

Newcastle Confirm Trippier Departure

Newcastle confirmed the news with a statement on the club’s website, which included comments from Trippier and Howe. It stated:

“Newcastle United can announce that Kieran Trippier will leave the club this summer when his contract expires.”

Trippier’s future had been uncertain ahead of his contract expiring in June. There were suggestions that a renewal was on the cards if Livramento were to leave amid interest from Arsenal and Manchester City.

That isn’t the case and both the player and the Magpies have decided the time is right to end his spell on Tyneside. The Englishman told club media:

“The time has come to leave this amazing club after four-and-a-half years. This is where I have felt most at home. It’s emotional, and I’m really going to miss it… “I’m going to miss everyone at the club. Thank you.”

Trippier arrived with Newcastle embroiled in a relegation battle but alongside Howe they helped turn things around. His leadership has been extremely valuable over the years and he’s been able to represent the club in the UEFA Champions League.

This season, he has made 34 appearances across competitions, posting four assists. It will be interesting to see where his future lies and whether he opts to remain in the English top-flight.

The Right Call

Trippier is a hero who took a risk when he joined back in early 2022, given the precarious situation the club found itself in. He has embodied the spirit of the Toon Army and put in many memorable performances in front of them.

That said, this Magpies team needs a major overhaul, and that means a rebuild this summer. Moving veteran players might be how the transfer chiefs plan to make significant changes to Howe’s squad.

The news might not come as a shock to many because it looked increasingly likely that his time was up at St James’ Park. But all eyes will be on whether this has a knock-on effect on Livramento’s future.
