- Anthony Gordon could leave Newcastle United in hours
- Barcelona closing in on English forward
- Gordon’s time at St James’ Park is up
Anthony Gordon is reportedly likely to join Barcelona from Newcastle United and a deal could be completed in the coming hours. The English forward has looked increasingly likely to depart St James’ Park.
According to Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez Haya of El Chiringuito TV, Gordon’s potential move to Barca could be sorted in “the next few hours.” A deal between the two clubs might be agreed before the World Cup and his signing is imminent.
Gordon had been linked with Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs. He’s been with the Magpies since January 2023, winning the Carabao Cup last season.
Barcelona set to sign Gordon
Spanish journalist Juli Claramunt claims that Barca are offering €70m (£60m) to sign Gordon. Personal terms are thought to have been agreed and a move looks to be close.
The 25-year-old has sat on the bench in each of Newcastle’s last four league games. Eddie Howe opted not to use him amid speculation growing over his future and his obvious desire to leave the club.
Gordon played against Barca three times in the UEFA Champions League this season. Hansi Flick and his coaching staff will have got a good chance to assess the player and what he could bring to the Catalans.
A sorry exit
Gordon has looked increasingly likely to leave Newcastle since early May and Bayern seemed the likeliest destination. The Bundesliga giants were on the lookout for a new winger but they don’t appear keen to match or try to beat Barca’s bid for the player.
The La Liga heavyweights want a new attacker to strengthen Flick’s squad. If Gordon does join the Blaugrana, that might rule out a move for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford.
For Newcastle, it only further reinforces the need for more attacking reinforcements. A dissapointing season saw Howe’s men finish 12th in the Premier League and crash out to Barca in the Champions League Round of 16.
Gordon has appeared 46 times across competitions this season, posting 17 goals and five assists. He joined the Magpies from Everton for around £45m in late January 2023.
