- Newcastle United hold longstanding interest in Jonathan David
- Aston Villa also linked with Juventus forward
- Serie A giants open to £25m sale after player labelled ‘flop’
Newcastle United could reignite interest in Juventus forward Jonathan David this summer, according to reports from Italy.
The 26-year-old found himself at the centre of a drawn out transfer saga last summer, when available as a free agent following his release from Lille.
There were murmurs of interest from the Magpies at the time, with Eddie Howe’s side in the market for an Alexander Isak replacement. Newcastle, of course, eventually opted for Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle United linked with Jonathan David once again
West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur both appeared to be the most seriously interested parties from the Premier League last summer, with the chance to sign a striker with Champions League, Europa League and Conference League experience an enticing option.
David’s agent had even been spotted visiting the London Stadium to watch West Ham but the player eventually opted to move to Juventus.
In his first season with the Serie A giants, David bagged eight goals and picked up five assists in 46 outings, but only found the back of the net one time since the start of February.
Tutto Juve now claims that Juventus could already be ready to cash in on the ‘flop’ with an asking price of around £25 million placed on his head.
Aston Villa are also claimed to be monitoring a swoop, alongside the Magpies. David will be involved in the World Cup this summer as part of the Canada squad.
The host nation are in Group B and will go up against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland. The competition could give suitors the chance to see David in action on the world’s biggest stage before weighing up a bid.
David tipped to bounce back from Juventus debut season
David is tipped to bounce back from an underwhelming first campaign at Juventus by none other than French legend Zinedine Zidane.
Having played at Juventus himself, Zidane said: “David is excellent, I’ve seen him with Lille in recent years.
“He just needs time. I didn’t understand anything in my first three months in Turin. David needs to understand Juve, and the coach must be important to him: trust and time are required. I’m sure he’ll score many goals, like Vlahovic and Openda.”
