- Magpies in advanced talks with Ligue 2 outfit Reims
Newcastle United are locked in advanced talks with Ligue 2 side Reims over the transfer of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen following the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.
A busy summer of transfer business has sprung into life this week with the Magpies confirming the sale of Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million on Friday afternoon.
It’s been widely reported that Newcastle must sell before they buy this summer and incomings are now one step closer thanks to the cash injected from the Gordon sale.
Newcastle United set to follow Anthony Gordon sale with goalkeeper transfer
The next piece of business for Newcastle appears likely to be in the goalkeeping position. Eddie Howe has flip-flopped between Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale this season with the feeling that the club is without an unquestionable number one.
The Magpies hold the option to buy Ramsdale from parent club Southampton but are not expected to activate that £25 million clause. Meanwhile, Nick Pope is entering the final 12 months of his contract and has potential suitors in Premier League rivals Leeds United.
Newcastle had been hotly linked with a swoop for James Trafford, with the England international’s dream move to Manchester City from Burnley last season not going to plan. The 23-year-old has had to settle for a role as second-choice behind Champions League winner Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Magpies had seen a £27 million bid accepted for Trafford last summer but the player chose to move to the Etihad Stadium. It had been reported that Newcastle could return for the player this summer, but sights now appear to be set on Jaouen.
Ewen Jaouen ready to make Newcastle United move
The Chronicle reports that the club have ‘held discussions’ with both Reims and the player’s representatives in ‘recent days’. At this stage, there is no agreement, but reports in France claim that the 20-year-old is ready to make the move to Tyneside.
It’s added that both Newcastle and Reims feel that talks are moving in the right direction with negotiations at an advanced stage. There is interest from both Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton but it is the North East side who are frontrunners.
Jaouen made 35 appearances for Reims last season in Ligue 2, conceding just 35 goals and keeping 15 clean sheets. The shot-stopper stands at 6 feet and 6 inches and fits the profile of young players being targeted by Newcastle.
Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri had reported that a £17 million fee is the verbal agreement between the two clubs and that Jaouen had visited the Magpies’ facilities ahead of the move.
