Last night saw Arsenal taste cruel defeat in the Champions League final on penalties at the hands of PSG. The game was on a knife-edge for the entire 120 minutes, with the Gunners ultimately coming undone in the big moments.

With Jurrien Timber returning from injury but not fit enough to start the game, Mikel Arteta was forced to deploy 21-year-old centre-back Cristhian Mosquera at right-back.

It must be noted that Mosquera was good for a big part of the game, but, in the 65th minute, all that good work was undone with a moment of madness that saw a lunging challenge from behind bring down the lively Kvaratskhelia for a penalty that ultimately levelled the game.

The moment was a rather damning reminder of how much Arsenal need to strengthen at right-back this summer, with the injury issues of Timber and Ben White having caused problems all season.

Arsenal’s right-back issues & Livramento interest

In the immediate aftermath of the game, Arteta was open about the right-back problems when addressing the media and admitted it was an area to focus on with summer recruitment.

Ben White is widely thought to be in line for a move away from the club this summer, which would leave Timber as the only recognised right-back.

Arsenal are preparing for a future without White and the Gunners have been linked to a few names already ahead of the summer window, the most prominent of which is Newcastle’s Tino Livramento.

Livramento will likely cost somewhere in the region of £50m, if not more than that, given the mass of interest around all of the Magpies’ big names this summer.

Livramento would be an excellent option for Arteta, with his defensive qualities his best attributes but also the ability to get into forward areas when needed, particularly when inverting into midfield.

The England international can also play at left-back, which would be useful for the versatility of Arteta’s side, especially given the other positions the likes of Hincapie and Myles Lewis-Skelly are often used in.

Why a Livramento deal would suit Newcastle

It is widely speculated that the Magpies are setting the limit at two of their bigger names leaving this summer. Something they have been forced into due to the lack of European football.

With Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona already complete, of the other big players in the squad, it is thought Livramento would be high on the list of names the club’s hierarchy are willing to let go of.

A deal for the 23-year-old would hopefully be the catalyst to retaining the likes of Lewis Hall and Bruno Guimarães.

There is also a decently sized rebuild expected at the club this summer, but it has been reported that the Magpies will also need to sell to ensure they remain compliant financially.

Gordon’s sale accumulated a handsome sum of £70m for the bank balance. Add to that another £50m+ for Livramento, and that would almost perfectly set Newcastle up to make all the signings needed.

It would also free up some large wage room, which could be crucial in negotiations for the type of player Newcastle will be looking to attract.

Whilst not ideal, of all the positions to need a new first-team player, the right-back position is one with a good amount of value and not particularly lofty prices.

Arsenal are set to have almost no financial restirctions this summer, so would be able to pay the fee. Newcastle would likely be willing to sell to fund other upgrades and reportedly already have a list of names to replace Livramento. It feels like almost the perfect deal for both clubs.

matchday.
