- Anthony Gordon medical at Barcelona delayed
- Newcastle United star has now arrived at hospital
- Magpies agree £70m deal with Barcelona
Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon has now undergone his medical in Barcelona ahead of an expected £70 million move to Spain.
The Magpies shook hands with the Catalan giants over a deal which will see them make a profit of around £25 million on the fee paid to former club Everton in 2023.
The Toffees are set to pocket some financial windfall from the deal, thanks to a sell-on clause inserted into the transfer with Newcastle. However, it’s a major boost to the bank at St James’ Park, which can fund investment this summer.
Anthony Gordon medical at Barcelona hit by delay
Gordon’s move has been the talk of the football world on Thursday. The player’s journey to Barcelona has not been kept under the radar.
The 25-year-old was pictured jetting off from Tyneside earlier today and there were also images of the player in the private jet that were circulated online.
Gordon was then seen arriving at the airport in Barcelona. The player did not look rushed, despite delays today that had to see his medical pushed back. The Newcastle man briefly posed for photos and chatted with Spanish reporters before getting in his taxi and heading for his medical.
SPORT report that the medical had been booked by the club to take place at 2 pm but that the player’s flight touched down in Barcelona almost and hour and half later than expected.
The reason for the delay is not confirmed but the outlet speculates that the delay may have been to help generate the maximum amount of fanfare around the transfer.
Gordon passes medical ahead of Newcastle United exit
SPORT also add that the medical has now taken place and was completed shortly before 3:45 pm at Barcelona Hospital. That medical is now believed to have been passed.
That will be a relief for Gordon, Newcastle United and Barcelona with no late drama to get the deal over the line. The player has struggled with fitness concerns this season.
Gordon missed out against Brentford and Manchester City in November with a hip injury. It was then a hamstring niggle that sidelined the player against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal in April.
The forward then returned to the matchday squad for the final four matches of the campaign against Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham, but was not handed any minutes.
After the draw against Nottingham Forest, Howe had explained: “It was tactical.
“The team has performed well in Anthony’s absence. Obviously, we have gone with a bit more solidity with Joelinton playing wide and one winger the other side just to try and strengthen us defensively, because we weren’t happy with how we were defending.
“Since January, really, we have been disappointed – so a change of structure really. Ant has come back to fitness. He’s training well but, also, I’m looking at the future as well.”
