- Manchester United consider Lewis Hall transfer move
- Newcastle United not pressured to sell England international
- Thomas Tuchel green lights World Cup transfer business
Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has been given the green light to complete a summer transfer move during the World Cup, should he and the club want to do so, by England manager Thomas Tuchel.
The Three Lions begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia next Wednesday and, should Tuchel’s side go all the way to the final, will be engaged in international duty until July 19.
With the Premier League season booked to start on August 22, it could give players a short turnaround to prepare for the 2026/27 club campaign.
Manchester United ‘consider’ Newcastle United swoop
Several of the England stars are at the centre of transfer sagas already this summer. Nottingham Forest man Elliot Anderson is expected to make a blockbuster £100 million move to either Manchester United or Manchester City, while Morgan Rogers is linked with the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
The Athletic last week reported that Magpies full-back Lewis Hall is also ‘being considered’ as a summer purchase at Old Trafford.
Red Devils director of recruitment Christopher Vivell knows Hall thanks to his time at Chelsea, which has helped fuel rumours. The Athletic added that the Magpies are ‘not looking to sell’ the 21-year-old but that a ‘significant’ first team reshape is expected. The outlet also acknowledges that Hall is not necessarily a shoo-in for the starting XI under Howe next season.
There’s a long way to go before any deal is struck between Newcastle United and Manchester United, but there’s also a very long way to go in the World Cup. Speaking about transfer dealings this week, Tuchel admitted that the tournament would not get in the way of potential transfers.
Thomas Tuchel would not stand in way of Lewis Hall exit
He said: “There has to be common sense I would say, I would not like it on a -1 and a matchday. That’s the policy. And everything else, if it is quietly done, privately done, done efficiently, we are always happy to help to have clarity around the player.
“I think the best we can have is clarity. If anyone has the chance to complete a change of club and a transfer, we will not stand in the way but it has to align of course with our schedule and our goals which is to be focused and prepare for matches.
“The last day before the match for sure and the second day before a match, not. Let’s see. We take it case by case. Until now, no player approached me.”
Tuchel went on to explain that the England set-up has the means in place to conduct a player’s medical, should one be needed for a move.
The England manager said: “The doctor is ready to take any medical if needed. It would be ideal if their futures were sorted before the World Cup but that’s maybe not real life.
“I can see, of course, the distraction is clubs are fighting for you, want to sign you and sporting directors, agents and coaches are trying to get you on the phone, of course it is a distraction but it is just also reality.
“We will always recommend the player to take a decision before a tournament starts, as early as possible and then go with the decision, but it is not always possible for the player. I think we are not alone in this, it is how this thing plays.”
Tuchel will have been glad to see former Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon complete his move to Barcelona at the end of May, putting to bed transfer rumours that had been snowballing since the previous international break.
When asked about Hall’s future at the end of the season, Howe was adamant that the full-back would be in black and white for ‘years to come’.
The Magpies paid £35 million to sign Hall from Chelsea in July 2024 and the player has gone on to make 102 appearances for the club. Any summer exit from St James’ Park is expected to cost around £50 million.
