- Zadok Yohanna has officially signed for Brighton
- Nigerian attacker was a top target for Newcastle United
- Luke Edwards gives inside track on the Magpies’ pursuit
Zadok Yohanna was a top target for Newcastle United, but yesterday, it was officially confirmed that the Nigerian attacker has joined Brighton.
The Magpies have been on the lookout for an attacker to replace Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona earlier this summer.
Yohanna quickly emerged as one to watch and Newcastle United‘s interest was well documented, with other clubs like Brighton, Chelsea and Tottenham also in the running.
Contrasting reports emerged on his potential arrival on Tyneside. However, last night, the Seagulls officially confirmed his arrival, which came as a massive blow for Eddie Howe and Co.
And now, Luke Edwards has revealed why the 18-year-old didn’t join Newcastle United.
Newcastle United never made official offer for Zadok Yohanna
A lot of reports claimed Newcastle had a bid accepted by AIK for Yohanna, with Chelsea also matching the Swedish side’s offer.
However, around 48 hours ago, Edwards wrote on X that the Magpies are yet to submit an offer for the Nigerian, suggesting that their interest wasn’t as advanced as what was reported.
To be fair to the Newcastle fan base, Edwards has got his fair share of things wrong in the transfer market – particularly during the Alexander Isak saga last summer – so they took his information with a pinch of salt.
However, he has now been vindicated as Yohanna has joined Brighton. And after his signing was officially announced, Edwards once again took to X to confirm that the Magpies never made an official offer for him.
Eddie Howe needs to look elsewhere
Yohanna has played just around 1000 minutes of senior football in his young career so far. And while his natural ability is certainly unquestionable, does that warrant a fee of around £22m?
The Seagulls have been renowned for their transfers, but truth be told, in recent seasons, their recruitment has been a mixed bag.
Yohanna is clearly a talented player, but Newcastle won’t lose too much sleep after missing out on him only because it is still early days in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies want to sign Victor Munoz, who is set to represent Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He looks like a talented player in his own right, but if he makes an impression on the grandest stage, his value will certainly skyrocket.
