- Newcastle United miss out on Zadok Yohanna
- Nigerian winger has officially joined Brighton
- Magpies frustrated after drawn-out transfer saga
Newcastle United fans are probably tired of hearing Zadok Yohanna’s name, but the good thing is that it won’t be the case anymore.
Brighton have confirmed on their official social media channels that the winger has signed for the club after a fantastic breakthrough season at AIK in Sweden.
Newcastle United were locked in talks to sign Yohanna and even had a bid accepted.
However, the 18-year-old has chosen to further his development at the Amex Stadium, which is a massive blow for the Magpies.
Yadok Yohanna joins Brighton
Since the season ended, Eddie Howe and Co have been on the lookout for a winger.
After losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, the need to bring in attacking reinforcements increased as the England international was Newcastle’s most productive player in front of goal last season.
Yohanna has just over 1000 minutes of senior football under his belt, but such was his impact in Sweden that a handful of clubs across the world were willing to break the bank for him.
Newcastle were well and truly in the running, but the 18-year-old has joined the Seagulls on a five-year deal, with the transfer fee expected to be in the region of £21m plus add-ons.
Yohanna’s decision to move elsewhere is undoubtedly a huge blow for Howe. However, the good thing is that it’s still early days in the summer transfer window, so the Magpies have plenty of time to identify alternatives.
What next for Newcastle United?
Last summer, Newcastle left it too late in the transfer market as they brought in Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade and Jacob Ramsey after remaining quiet for large parts of the window.
They also took too long to pivot to other targets when players they wanted – like Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko – decided to move elsewhere.
This summer, however, the Magpies are targeting multiple players in the same position, which would allow them to cover their tracks quite well.
Victor Munoz has emerged as a target for Newcastle United, with the Spaniard part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after making a massive impression with Osasuna.
Maybe he’s the one the Magpies will turn to after missing out on Yohanna. Nevertheless, based on scouting reports and any available video footage of the player, it certainly looks like they’ve let a good one slip.
